Oneyda Acevedo Acuña
I'm 28 years old and I have two children, a son Justine who is 9 years old and a daughter Daisy who is 7. I live with my husband and my in-laws in Managua.
I finished the fifth year of high school and had to stop going to school because I was pregnant with my son and we didn't have the money for me to continue studying. Whatever my husband made had to go for milk and food for the baby. Then I became pregnant with my daughter and it was even more difficult for me to study. My parents did not go to school and they are farmers and had no money. My husband and in-laws all worked to provide a house and food and there was nothing left over for me to go to school.
Then I found out about the Scholarship Fund that made it possible for people who were committed to go back to school if they couldn't study because they did not have sufficient funds. I decided I wanted to be one of those who received a scholarship and went to talk with the couple who runs the fund.
I wanted to move forward in my life and to fulfill my dream of being a professional and being able to help support my children. I have always wanted to study business administration. And now I have the opportunity to pursue my dream.
I'm in my fourth year at the UNICIT which means the University of Science and Technology here in Managua. I have eight more months to go and then three months of training to get my degree.
I feel that this has been a very difficult but very good experience. It is difficult because I wasn't sure I could do the work especially the math that is needed. But I did fine and I have more confidence than when I started. I have gotten a couple of part-time jobs based on my being in school. It has been very helpful that the organizers of the Fund are available to help you with problems in your studies.
I am so happy that there are people who support the Scholarship Fund and that I was one of the people who was accepted to receive a scholarship. I would like to continue my studies and go on to get a Masters in Business Administration at some point so that I am even more efficient and professional. Now I believe in my abilities and believe I could do something that I never believed I could even think about getting a Masters degree!
